AFCI vs. GFCI Breakers: A Loganville Homeowner’s Guide

Both devices shut off power to reduce electrical danger, but they watch for different hazards. This guide explains what AFCI and GFCI mean, where Georgia homes commonly use them, what a trip may indicate, and when resetting the breaker is not enough.

The short answer: An AFCI is primarily intended to reduce fire risk from dangerous electrical arcing. A GFCI is primarily intended to reduce shock and electrocution risk when current escapes its intended path. A dual-function breaker can provide both forms of protection, but AFCI and GFCI are not interchangeable terms.

The easiest way to remember the difference is arc/fire protection versus ground-fault/shock protection. Breaker versions also retain their normal overcurrent protection against overloads and short circuits.

What an AFCI Breaker Protects Against

Electrical arcing can occur when current jumps across a damaged conductor or an unreliable connection. Examples include a cord damaged by furniture, insulation pierced by a fastener, a loose terminal, or a worn connection that produces intermittent arcing.

An AFCI evaluates the electrical waveform for certain arcing characteristics and opens the circuit when it recognizes a dangerous condition. Its main safety purpose is fire prevention. It is not a surge protector and does not replace required GFCI protection.

In our local service work, recurring AFCI problems have included aging or failed breakers, damaged cords and appliances, loose back-stabbed connections, and shared-neutral or other wiring errors.

What a GFCI Breaker Protects Against

A ground fault occurs when current leaves its intended path. That unintended path could involve wet equipment, damaged insulation, a metal enclosure, the earth—or a person.

A Class A GFCI watches for a small difference between outgoing and returning current and quickly opens the circuit. Siemens identifies its residential Class A GFCI breakers as 5 mA devices. The primary safety purpose is protection against severe electric shock and electrocution. A GFCI is not a water detector; water simply makes unintended current paths more likely.

In local homes, we frequently see GFCI problems connected with moisture or weather exposure and incorrect LINE/LOAD wiring at GFCI receptacles. Outdoor circuits also add the risk of damaged underground cable.

How AFCI and GFCI Breakers Are Similar

  • Both are automatic protective devices that interrupt power when their sensing electronics detect a specified hazard.
  • Both can be installed as circuit breakers in a compatible electrical panel and protect the branch circuit beyond the breaker.
  • Both include a TEST button and must be tested according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
  • Both may refuse to reset while a fault remains on the circuit.
  • Both can eventually fail internally, even when the connected wiring is not the cause.
  • Neither should be bypassed or replaced with a standard breaker where the protective function is required.

A tripped handle is an alert, not a diagnosis. The device type suggests which hazard it may have detected, but testing is still needed to identify the actual cause.

What the NEC and Georgia Electrical Code Require

As of January 1, 2026, the Georgia Department of Community Affairs lists the 2023 National Electrical Code with 2026 Georgia amendments as the state’s current mandatory electrical code. For one- and two-family dwellings and townhouses, Georgia’s electrical requirements come from the NEC as amended by the state—not from the electrical chapters of the residential code.

Why this matters: A national article that repeats the unamended 2023 NEC location lists can be wrong for a Georgia project. Georgia specifically revised sections 210.8 and 210.12. The applicable permit date, exceptions, installation details, equipment instructions and local authority having jurisdiction still matter.

GFCI locations under Georgia-amended NEC 210.8

Georgia’s amended 210.8(A) requires qualifying 125- through 250-volt receptacles to have GFCI protection in locations that include:

  • Bathrooms
  • Garages and certain accessory buildings
  • Outdoors
  • Crawl spaces at or below grade
  • Basements
  • Kitchen receptacles serving countertop surfaces
  • Receptacles within 6 feet of a sink
  • Boathouses
  • Receptacles within 6 feet of a bathtub or shower stall
  • Laundry areas
  • Indoor damp and wet locations

Georgia also revised 210.8(D) for specific appliances, including sump pumps and dishwashers, and 210.8(F) for certain dwelling-unit outdoor outlets.

AFCI locations under Georgia-amended NEC 210.12(B)

Georgia’s amended 210.12(B) applies AFCI protection to 120-volt, single-phase 10-, 15- and 20-amp branch circuits supplying outlets or devices in locations that include:

  • Family rooms
  • Dining rooms
  • Living rooms and parlors
  • Libraries and dens
  • Bedrooms
  • Sunrooms and recreation rooms
  • Closets
  • Hallways
  • Similar areas

These are Georgia’s amended locations. Kitchens and laundry areas appear in many generic AFCI summaries of the base NEC, but they are not expressly listed in Georgia’s amended 210.12(B) location list effective January 1, 2026.

What Does It Mean When an AFCI or GFCI Breaker Trips?

A trip means the breaker opened the circuit. It does not automatically reveal which protective function operated or whether the breaker itself is defective.

When an AFCI breaker trips

The AFCI may have detected an arcing pattern, but a breaker can also open because of an overload or short circuit. Common field causes include a loose connection, damaged cord, faulty appliance, shared-neutral problem, incorrect wiring or internal breaker failure. Some models provide an indicator or diagnostic code that helps narrow the cause.

When a GFCI breaker trips

The GFCI may have detected current escaping the intended path. Moisture, deteriorated insulation, underground cable damage and appliance leakage are common possibilities. Because the device is also a circuit breaker, an overload or short circuit can trip it as well.

“Nuisance trip” should be a conclusion reached after testing—not the starting assumption. Resetting a protective device repeatedly can hide a condition that deserves investigation.

How to Reset an AFCI or GFCI Breaker

  1. Turn off or unplug connected loads.
    This removes appliances and portable devices as immediate variables.
  2. Use dry hands and stand on a dry surface.
    Do not touch the panel if it is wet, damaged, hot, buzzing or producing a burning odor.
  3. Move the breaker handle fully to OFF.
    A tripped breaker may rest between ON and OFF and usually will not reset until moved completely to OFF.
  4. Move the handle firmly to ON once.
    Do not force it or hold it in position.
  5. Stop if it trips immediately or will not latch.
    A fault may still be present, or the breaker may have failed.

How to Test the Protective Function

  1. Leave the breaker energized.
    Follow the label and the manufacturer’s instructions for that exact model.
  2. Press the TEST button.
    The handle should move to the tripped or OFF position and power should be interrupted.
  3. Reset fully OFF, then ON.
    Confirm that normal power returns.
  4. Call for service if the test fails.
    A device that does not trip during testing, will not reset, or fails to restore power may not be providing its intended protection.
Testing frequency: The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission recommends testing GFCIs and AFCIs monthly. Always follow the instructions printed on the device or supplied by its manufacturer.

Real AFCI and GFCI Troubleshooting Cases

These two service calls show why a breaker trip is only the beginning of the diagnosis. One protective device had failed; the other was correctly responding to damaged wiring.

Two Bedrooms Lost Power

Several outlets and switches stopped working in two bedrooms with no known triggering event. The 15-amp Siemens AFCI breaker was in the tripped position and would not reset after being moved fully OFF and back ON.

Testing performed
We inspected the affected outlets and switches, checked for short circuits and disconnected the branch-circuit load wire from the breaker.
Finding
The AFCI would not reset even with the load disconnected, pointing to an internal breaker failure. Heat discoloration was present, while the bus connection and wire termination were secure and undamaged.
Repair and verification
We installed the correct compatible Siemens 15-amp AFCI breaker, verified voltage, checked every affected outlet and switch, operated the AFCI test button and confirmed normal operation with the customer.

Outdoor Pond Circuit Tripped Immediately

An outdoor pond circuit would trip its GFCI immediately. Instead of assuming the GFCI was defective, we isolated the pump and tested the wiring.

Testing performed
We isolated the pond pump, tested the conductors to ground, traced the underground cable and located visible cable damage.
Finding
The damaged underground wiring created the condition that caused the GFCI to trip. In this case, the protective device was doing its job.
Repair and verification
We completed the repair using a listed underground splice, retested the conductors to ground, verified voltage, tested the GFCI’s TEST and RESET functions and confirmed that the pump operated without tripping.

When Should You Call an Electrician?

One proper reset after unplugging portable loads is reasonable when the panel and surrounding area are dry and show no signs of damage. Continued tripping calls for diagnosis—not repeated resetting.

Homeowners should not remove the panel cover, disconnect breaker conductors, perform insulation-resistance testing or disturb underground wiring.

  • !The TEST button does not trip the device.
  • !You see heat discoloration, melting, scorching or a damaged panel connection.
  • !You hear buzzing or crackling, smell burning insulation or see sparks.

  • !Someone feels a shock or tingling sensation from an appliance or metal surface.
  • !Several outlets, switches or rooms lose power and the cause is unclear.

AFCI and GFCI Breaker Questions

Can a breaker provide both AFCI and GFCI protection?

Yes. A listed dual-function circuit breaker can combine arc-fault and personnel-level ground-fault protection. It must be compatible with the electrical panel, branch-circuit wiring and application.

Is a “combination-type AFCI” the same as a dual-function breaker?

No. “Combination-type AFCI” describes the AFCI’s ability to address more than one type of arcing condition; it does not mean AFCI plus GFCI. “Dual-function” identifies a breaker that provides both AFCI and GFCI protection.

Does an AFCI protect people from electric shock?

An AFCI’s primary purpose is detecting dangerous arcing associated with fire risk. It should not be treated as a substitute for required GFCI protection. A dual-function AFCI/GFCI breaker provides both protections.

Does a GFCI receptacle protect against overloads?

A GFCI receptacle provides ground-fault protection but is not the branch circuit’s overcurrent device. A GFCI circuit breaker combines ground-fault protection with the breaker’s normal overload and short-circuit protection.

Why does my AFCI or GFCI trip when nothing is plugged in?

The circuit may also supply hardwired equipment or downstream devices. Damaged wiring, moisture, neutral problems, incorrect connections or a failed breaker can cause a trip even when visible receptacles appear unused.

Can I replace an AFCI or GFCI breaker with a standard breaker?

Not where the protective function is required. Removing AFCI or GFCI protection can eliminate an important safety layer and may violate the adopted electrical code.

Do older Georgia homes have to be upgraded immediately?

Not every existing home must automatically be rewired whenever a newer code takes effect. Requirements can be triggered by new work, alterations, extensions or replacements, and the permit date and local authority’s interpretation matter. Ask the authority having jurisdiction or a qualified electrician about the specific project.
